afternoon with senate majority leader reid, senate minority leader mcconnell, speaker boehner, and leader pelosi at the white house. senate majority leader harry reid took to the senate floor this morning to, shall we say, let boehner have it. >> if we go over the cliff, and it looks like that's where we're headed, mr. president, the house of representatives as we speak, with four days left after today before the first of the year aren't here with the speaker having told them they'll have -- they'll give them 48 hours' notice. the american people i don't think understand the house of representatives is operating without the house of representatives. it's being operated with a dictatorship of the speaker, not allowing the vast majority of the house of representatives to get what they want. >> lo and behold, the markets started to tank, in part on fears of reid's warning that it looked like we were going over the cliff. within an hour word came that the house would return to washington and be in session on sunday at 6:30 p.m. boehner repeated his assertion that the senate would pass the two bills

we have not seen speaker boehner or nancy pelosi, leader pelosi walk into the white house yet. before i plugged in at least she hadn't, they hadn't arrived. but it is a matter of minutes until they should all take their seats in the oval office and begin the discussion that should help resolve whether or not the nation will go over the fiscal cliff in the next few days. this won't end the discussion, but it should launch us into the next steps. can they hash out the basic form of an agreement, a scaled down agreement. if they reach that threshold, can the senators assure each other that they have the time to get this done and no senator will filibuster it? if that's the case, they bring it to a vote tomorrow, and/or sunday and does the house agree to bring it to a vote on the floor of the house. those are a lot of ifs and we have until just monday night to get it all done. >> you'll be standing by, watching it all with every single detail. thank you, jessica yellin. now to lisa desjardins, live on capitol hill for us. so, lisa, just caught you talking with senator ben nelson of

at least so far as nancy pelosi is concerned. you can see this tape. she obviously has left the meeting. john boehner, the speaker of the house, has also been seen leaving. so what we want to do is find out what is going on here. obviously we have our jessica yellin there and we will talk to her a little later about what she has learned. now, the fiscal cliff and these last-ditch talks is the only game in town. joining me for today's strategy session is roland martin and cnn contributor erick erickson, editor-in-chief of. they are saying, hey, we don't have to compromise. we have more people in congress coming in that are democrats. the president doesn't have to give on that $250,000 top. where do you stand on this? do you think the president does or should compromise up to -- particularly on the tax issue? >> you can't be a democrat and ask republicans to compromise if you don't want to give up something. i think the president clearly understood that. so when he laid the $250,000 out, he gave himself some room because, again, you saw speaker boehner's

does john boehner need nancy pelosi in order to get anything passed? >> reporter: yes, absolutely. no question about it. that became incredibly obvious when he couldn't even get his own republicans to effectively save them from themselves and at least have some political cover by voting to keep tax cuts in place for everybody except millionaires because they said they wouldn't help him with what they call a political ploy. i think that's true but actually talking to people on both sides of the aisle here, because the ball is now in the senate -- the senate's court, the feeling is that if they can kind of break the dam in the senate and if something actually passes, you've already seen over the past two days house republicans saying that they hadn't said before, if the senate passes something, we'll take it up. and if that's the case, the sort of betting is that with the help of the majority of the democrats, probably most of the democrats and maybe, you know, a few dozen or more republicans, that's how it would get passed. but, candy, it's still a big if, as we just witnessed, whet
